In The Absence Of Active Assistance From The Free World The Soviet Army Crushed The Revolution And Terror Was Reinstituted   

The Sad End - While The Dead Were Buried Retributions Began By The Communists Who Were Once Again In Power

For Surviving Revolutionaries Escape Became The Logical Choice. During Attempted Escape To The Free Austria Five Of Us Joined Near The Border. For One Day and Parts of Two Nights We Were Hidden And Fed By A Roma Family. By Doing This These Courageous People Risked Severe Retaliatory Action By The Communist Authorities. (The Fifth Person Did Not Wish To Be Photographed.) November 1956.

A Young Man Of This Family Helped Us To Walk To Freedom. By Walking With Us At Night He Helped Us To Avoid Patrolling Soviet Tanks And Watchtowers Mounted By Armed Border Guards. At The End, He Pointed The Way To Freedom. On The Photo He Is Seen Standing Behind The Lady Of The House.

We Were Very Surprised When We Discovered That We Both Grew Up In The Same Village (Edeleny) In Hungary. There Was However A Gap Between Our Departures And Thus Of Our Recollections. She Last Saw Edeleny In 1906 While My Departure Took Place In 1956. This Photo Was Taken In The New York Home Of Mrs. Melher On The Occasion Of His Octogenarian Son "Pista's" (i.e. Istvan) Visit In 1983.  

 

 

The Week Of The Anniversary Of The 1956 Hungarian Revolution Has Become The Time Of The Weeklong Annual Meeting Of The American - Hungarian Medical Association In Sarasota, Florida. Tribute To The 1956 Hungarian Revolution In The Form Of An Evening Program Was Always On The Agenda. In 1983 Among The Invitees Was The Well-known Hungarian Poet, Former Political Prisoner And Publisher Tibor Tollas From Munich, Germany. In Arizona We Visited Mr. Gergely Pongratz,  Mr. Pongratz Was Commander In Chief Of The Revolutionary Forces In The Corvin Koz, Budapest During The Revolution of 1956. The Group Under His Command Represented The Single Most Formidable Force Of Armed Resistors  To The Occupying Soviet Forces. I First Met Gergely And His Brother Odon In The Early Days Of The Revolution In The Corvin Koz. He Had A University Degree In Agricultural Sciences And In The United States, In 1989, Operated A Farm Near Tucson, Arizona.

 

 

Mr. Pongratz Was A Most Gracious Host Who Also Introduced Us To One Of His Sons Who Worked With Him At The Farm And Gave Us A Tour Of The Facility.

In The Late 1980s He And His Artist Wife Polly Parke Resided And Created In A Charming Home In A Secluded Area Of The Pocono Mountains In Pennsylvania. In 1989 I Drove To Their House With An Old Friend Of His, Who Was Visiting In New York From Hungary. A Most Friendly Reception Awaited Us (1989).

Several Of Gabe's Creations Were On Exhibit At the Guggenheim Museum In New York City

Between February 21 and June 11, 2003. These Represented His Artistic Contributions To The Five Part Cremaster Cycle By Matthew Barney And Consisted Of "Living Sculptures" For Cinematography. These Works Were Previously On Exhibit At The Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (Oct 10, 2002 - Jan 05, 2003) and The  Museum Ludwig at Cologne, Germany (June 06, 2002 - Sep 01, 2002).
